About Thin Bonding

  • Video still showing a nautical steering wheel and instrument panels

Thin bonding lets your design shine without bulky fasteners by using a virtually invisible industrial-strength bond to attach materials. Using a tape rather than a liquid adhesive allows you to customize the tape to the precise shape you need for the final design, as well as giving you production flexibility by leaving the liner in place until the second substrate is ready. Double coated or adhesive transfer tapes provide shear strength, conformability and high initial adhesion and have industrial applications in electronics, auto interiors, signage and graphics, sporting equipment and much more.

Visit our Double Sided Tapes page to learn more about the benefits common to all double sided tapes.

What is a Carrier, and Do All Tapes Have One?

Video: Double Coated or Adhesive Transfer?
  • The carrier is the material that holds or “carries” the adhesive; in double coated tapes (also called supported tapes) it separates the two adhesives. The carrier can be made of paper, plastic film, tissue or foam, and the type of carrier can be important for applications that need to withstand, as one example, the heat level of a paint-drying process or medical sterilization. Having a carrier in the middle enables two different adhesives to be applied for adhering dissimilar materials that require different bonding properties. Once the adhesive is applied to the carrier a liner is applied over one or both sides to protect the adhesive until the tape is applied.

  • There is also a class of double sided tapes with no carrier. Adhesive Transfer Tape (sometimes called ATT, transfer tape or unsupported tape) is composed of a thin film of adhesive with a liner over the top so it can be easily handled. As with other double sided tapes, an adhesive transfer tape is applied, then the liner is peeled off to apply the second substrate. With no carrier for separation these thin bonding tapes consist of one type of adhesive, but their overall temperature resistance is not limited by the temperature resistance of the carrier and they are extremely conformable to irregular surfaces.

Tape Format: Rolls vs. Shapes

You may be able to use tape straight from the roll, but many applications require bonds to be a specific size and shape. A converter will work with you to determine the specific carrier and adhesive for the job, then customize 3M products to the precise format you need for your application. Converted tapes can be supplied as rolls or sheets and can be configured for machine or manual application.
