Information Display Solutions

  • Customers expect the same kind of user experience from their digital cockpit that they have in their personal devices. 3M draws on its proven track record in consumer electronics to bring speed of development to manufacture of instrument clusters.

  • Automotive display system light management

For a Driver Information Display (DID), light is directed forward, up and center for optimal viewing. Center Information Displays (CIDs) deploy a wide band of light to accommodate both passenger and driver.  3M technologies solve the problem of unwanted windshield reflections.  Our light control films provide directional control and brightness enhancement - no thicker than copy paper.

Minimize night windshield reflections – while eliminating the hood

  • Digital displays can be mounted high on the dashboard to bring information closer to the driver helping to reduce distraction and increase safety. Analog displays have made brows a necessity in console designs to manage windshield reflections.

3M™ Advanced Light Control Film (ALCF) allows cockpit designs to meet increasing demands of modern digital displays while enabling design freedom eliminating the need for a brow. ALCF is a microlouver film that controls the distribution of light perpendicular to the louver structure (viewing angle) to create privacy, control reflections or improve display contrast.

3M™ Light Control Film PC (LCF-PC) offers narrower louver viewing control for improved center brightness for your instrument cluster designs. LCF-PC provides dashboard design flexibility as an anti-reflection solution for your OLED and LCD displays.

Increase light efficiency. Recycle. Reuse. Repeat.

  • An increase of backlight efficiency of 30-40% is achieved through rapid recycling of light.

In automotive ecosystems, engineers balance energy use and brightness output. We have a vast portfolio of light enhancement solutions for information displays.  3M™ Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (3M™ DBEF) is a multi-layer film designed to recycle polarized light.

3M™ DBEF transmits the polarization state that the LCD uses and reflects the polarization state it doesn’t use back into the backlight where it bounces and returns. Some of this light has changed polarization state and is transmitted to the LCD – resulting in less wasted light.

  • Bring brightness front and center with prisms.

On-axial luminance and readability can be improved with 3M™ Brightness Enhancement Film (3M™ BEF). 3M™ BEF uses prismatic structures to steer wide-angle light toward the viewer resulting in more light where it is most important. 3M offers BEF in a variety of densities and prism pitches (distance between apex points) to avoid unwanted moire ́ effects.

  • Powerful luminance starting at the source.

Boost the power of the light engine in the Picture Generation Unit (PGU) with 3M™ Enhanced Specular Reflector (ESR). Not your common shaving mirror, this material reflects greater than 98% of light, more reflective than both aluminum and silver. Unlike those reflective surfaces, ESRs maintain the color of the light. White light in, white light out. Individual layers reflect different colors across the spectrum. Increase brightness efficiency by placing this film behind the backlight.

  • Crispness, contrast and curves. Optical bonding to reduce glare.

Designers can use thinner bezels for sleek designs with Optically Clear Adhesives (OCAs). OCAs reduce ambient reflections from ~12% to ~4% by filling in the air gap between the cover lens and the LCD.  The result is much better contrast and readability for the viewer as well as durability and adhesive strength.

For curved lenses, we suggest 3M™ Contrast Enhancement Film (3M™ CEF).  This film is an OCA in sheet form to conform to the of the cover lens (whereas liquid-based adhesive which can pool around sharp curves). Using CEF also increases structural stiffness, providing greater reliability and durability.

Protect from heat and electromagnetic interference.

  • Aerial view of skyscrapers and a downtown city street

As automotive interior displays and information systems become more powerful and complex, heat and electromagnetic interference (EMI) including electrostatic discharge (ESD), may degrade performance and cause damage. To help your designs keep their cool and maintain maximum performance, our portfolio of thermal interface materials (TIMs) and EMI materials redirect heat and help keep EMI from impacting critical components. Improve performance, durability and reliability with 3M science.
