When the surface really matters – as a physical foundation for your automotive designs and in appearance and production efficiency – 3M delivers. Our wide variety of abrasive solutions includes micron-graded diamond mineral abrasive and our Precision-Shaped Grain (PSG) technology – microreplicated structures that contain abrasive minerals and enable extremely precise, consistent finishes. They are indicated in manual applications and can be configured into your robotic systems to maximize production efficiency.
3M cloth-backed discs have been helping automotive OEM professionals improve both finishes and process efficiency for decades. Our 3M™ Wetordry™ discs were originally introduced for wet sanding, which helped operators keep the work clean and visible during sanding. Today, a range of cloth-backed 3M abrasive discs meets specific needs for automotive sanding and grinding applications requiring refinement and durability.
Our portfolio of flexible, durable discs is available with conventional abrasives, our PSG technology or diamond abrasives. Combined with the uniformity and conformability of a film backings, our abrasives produce consistent finishes on flat surfaces and around even subtle curves or contours.
Designed for flowability when heated in conventional paint ovens, our melt sealing tapes are ideal for filling holes and seams and creating smooth, consistent surfaces. We provide these tapes for design flexibility, including thicker tapes for use on uneven spaces and thin, .5 mm tapes for applications where packaging space is a particular challenge.
For automotive surface prep applications requiring durable, precise abrasives with a conformable paper backing, 3M incorporates our high abrasive technologies into paper-backed discs. They are available with conventional abrasives and with our PSG technology. They are also available in multi-hole dust extraction patterns including our Clean Sanding configuration. Our Hookit™ and Stikit™ attachment or convenient disc roll packaging saves time and money. Many of these paper discs can be used for aggressive stock removal.
