As the manufacturing landscape evolves, you need two things to bring your automotive interiors together: design freedom and production efficiencies. 3M has a sizeable bonding and joining portfolio that continues to evolve for attachment that delivers both.
3M™ Wire Harness Tapes can help you solve the need for more wires with less package space. Prevent abrasion and manage noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Cut down on heat – the energy, the drips and the burns associated with hot melts in headliner manufacturing. Reduce the mess, too, eliminating drips during headliner stacking. reduce the need for added electrical tapes and other components during assembly.
Our Wire Harness Tapes feature viscoelastic foam cores for stress relaxation and acrylic adhesives for a continuous bond during motion or impact. Our selection of includes:
Tough, durable roll goods or piece parts feature mushroom-shaped interlocking heads. Mated pairs snap closed haptically for a durable bond, yet can be separated and reattached thousands of times – excellent for areas that require serviceability, such as headliner attachment, fuse box covers and service doors in electrified vehicles. You can design using Dual Lock fasteners, or it can be adopted late in the process as a fast attachment solution. It can also help reduce the transmission of vibration for sound isolation.
A wide assortment of available holding strengths and backings makes Dual Lock fasteners an extremely flexible attachment option for applications including:
3M has reliable adhesive solutions for all of your automotive interior applications. This includes adhesives formulated for fabrics, foams and plastics, ideal for seats and door panels. It includes sprayable adhesives for carpet attachment, and viscoelastic tapes for interior trim. It includes low-VOC and low-fogging adhesives for dashboards and instrument panels. And it includes adhesives options for nearly every automotive interior space in between.
Our selection of automotive interior tapes with adhesive on both sides let you create bonds where mechanical fasteners can’t go. This includes trim cover and bezel attachment, fabric and textile bonding tapes for soft cover bonding on armrests and consoles and many more. Tapes can be combined with foam flock, rubber or felt for interior components, or used to attach acoustic solutions.
Our selection of tapes help you meet stringent vehicle indoor air quality (VIAQ) standards, so you can concentrate on the design instead. 3M adhesive tapes for low-VOC (volatile organic compounds), low-odor and low-fogging applications are excellent for headliner components, seat heaters, instrument panels, electrical components and applications near glass or backlights.
When sophisticated driver monitoring technology meets thinner, sleeker interior designs, turn to 3M for solid bonds in places where other fastening methods are simply too obtrusive. Our double sided tapes deliver thin, powerful adhesive in places like driver and center information displays. Tapes for bonding flexible printed circuits can handle the curves and the heat. We provide tapes and adhesives formulated for lower volatile organic compounds (VOCs) too. 3M™ Acrylic Foam Tapes and 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes can bond sensor brackets to nearly any automotive substrate including plastics. Tape Attached Hardware with 3M™ Structural Bonding Tape allows for nearly invisible placement of sensors on glass.
As demand for customization drives the need for design flexibility on automotive interiors, it’s imperative that the solutions do not add complexity and time to production. 3M provides robust solutions that can add peace of mind and actually reduce process steps across automated, semi-automated and manual assembly systems.
3M has been developing water-based, low VOC and GREENGUARD™ certified adhesives for more than 40 years. Many of them are sprayable as well for simpler, safer manufacturing even when bonding carpeting or other large automotive interior surfaces. Adhesives feature a range of tacks and drying times, and bond to a wide variety of substrates.
Many of our adhesives combine a world-class bond with simple, pressure-sensitive application without treatments like corona, plasma or flame. Some are formulated for bonding without the time and expense of primer. Our tape-attached hardware features 3M™ Structural Bonding Tape which can be activated when exposed to UV light, so you can apply post-autoclave without heat.

Double-sided acrylic foam tapes are designed for bonding and conformability to automotive interiors, including rough or highly irregular surfaces. Sleek, smooth and highly-conformable double-sided tapes are formulated for reduced VOCs, and bond to surfaces including cellular urethane, polystyrene and polypropylene. Unlike conventional butyl sealing tapes, our Wire Harness Tapes feature the technology used for our 3M™ Acrylic Foam Tapes, trusted for vehicle interior and exterior part attachment for more than forty years.
Featuring some of our best-known adhesives - 3M™ High Strength Acrylic Adhesive 300LSE, 3M™ High Performance Acrylic Adhesive 200MP and others – our transfer tapes are excellent for bonding plastics, foam, fabric and metals as well as textured and irregular surfaces. They resist chemicals, humidity and moisture and perform across a wide temperature range. Several of our transfer tapes are designed for low-fogging applications such as interior fabrics and instrument panels.
Versatile, durable roll good in a variety of durable backings can be die-cut or cut to shape and size, and feature mushroom-shaped interlocking heads that snap closed haptically for a durable bond, yet can be separated and reattached. Roll goods can be paired for a variety of holding strengths. Dual Lock is also available with nonwoven backing for headliners.
Our system of interlocking mushroom-shaped heads is available in a variety of engineered parts for interior applications including keyhole slots, ultrasonically bonded PP and TPO, slide-in bracket attachment, cantilevered parts for sheet metal attachment, rigid back parts for use in conjunction with screws or rivets. Dual Lock is also available as 3M™ Dual Lock™ Super Reclosable Fasteners for heavy-duty applications. It is also available as 3M™ Position and Lock Fasteners (PLF), a new generation of hook-and-loop attachment.
Our well-known aluminum foil-backed tape is ideal for interior applications where heat is a concern. It features high thermal conductivity and reflectivity, as well as flame resistance to help protect temperature-sensitive materials. A highly-engineered pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive seals and protects against moisture, solvents and dust.
Our label materials are designed for all types of automobile interior applications. Choose labels that resist chemicals, weather and foot traffic – excellent for door frames. Many of our label materials feature adhesives for bonding to fabrics and low-surface-energy substrates. Labels are available with ultra-durable destructible and tamper-evident film facestocks and a variety of acrylic adhesives.
Tapes feature viscoelastic foam cores that allow for elongation and relaxation under load, minimizing stress on bondlines and supporting long-term hold. Adhesive systems are developed for bonding to a wide variety of automotive substrates including advanced medium- and low-surface-energy surfaces, and can reduce VOC emissions vs. conventional adhesives. Many of our Acrylic Foam Tapes can be attached without the need for adhesion promoters or other surface pre-treatments.
Designed for substrates commonly found in automotive interiors, our selection of tapes for reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) features adhesives tested to requirements such as JAMA and VDA278 low VOC requirements. Tapes bond to a wide variety of materials, ideal for automotive interiors. The carriers are easy to handle when laminating and make for precise and efficient die cutting.
Non-flammable, polychloroprene-free and rated for zero VOCs (per EPA test method 24), this adhesive for automotive interiors is specially designed for fast, heat resistant bonding, repositionability, and high final adhesion to a wide range of substrates. It provides up to three times more coverage vs. solvent based adhesives.
